The Next Train Out of Town

about

On the surface, my new single, “The Next Train Out of Town” tells the life story of a restless old hobo named Derek. But on a deeper level, it’s about the disrespect that people living "off the grid" have to deal with. Derek’s son, his ex-wife and even the narrator only see him as a haggard old man whose life decisions look like one mistake after the next. As the song nears conclusion, Derek gets to speak his side of the story. Check it out to hear what he has to say. Stylistically, this song lives somewhere between Ryan Bingham Bob Dylan Steve Earle Sturgill Simpson It’s an Americana-Country rock track with a gritty vocal punctuated by some “rough n’ ready” slide guitar. This is clearly not a pop country single. The production sounds more reminiscent of Merle Haggard & Waylon Jennings than any recent Nashville hit recordings. I’m into roots music that sounds like it needs a fresh coat of paint. So who the heck am I anyway? Fair question. I'm an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist who plays everything but the drums on my records. I produce my recordings at Leopard Lounge studio in LA. As a songwriter, my material is best described as a “new twist on a familiar sound”. I perform both solo acoustic gigs and full band shows with my combo The Driftwood Souls. lyrics

Derek saw the sunrise on Carolina Hill
And he drank the moonshine, from a West Virginia still
He rode that rail from Maine to Oregon
Once he tried to settle down but like the settin’ sun
He’s a drifter on the run

When the train pulled into Houston, he took a look around
His only son was living there on the outskirts of the town
Yeah- but he thinks his ol’ man is just a bum
Don’t wanna hear no stories, ‘bout what he’s seen or done
He’s a just drifter on the run

Those lines on his face run from Chattanooga to Cheyenne
Running from place to place, no one seems to understand
Poor ol’ drifter, his restless heart won’t settle down
Looking for, always looking for, the next train out of town

Jumped a boxcar to take him west to Santa Fe
He’s looking for a woman, she let him drift away
She said “love put roots into the ground”
He heard the locomotive’s cry, she called for him to come

Those lines on his face run from Chattanooga to Cheyenne
Running from place to place, no one seems to understand
Poor ol’ drifter, his restless heart won’t settle down
Looking for, always looking for, the next train out of town

He said: “You know, the midnight sky is different everywhere I go. “
“I tried to live a lie, but that was many years ago”
So he set out on the road one step ahead of the setting sun
Yeah, he’s a drifter on the run

He got lines on his face, the ol’ drifter
Been running from place to place, the ol’ drifter
Deep ol’ lines in his face, he’s a drifter on the run
